Commuters have been asked to help the environment by getting on their bike and cycling to work – at least once a week.
London Mayor Boris Johnson is launching a scheme he calls “Cycle Fridays”, when convoys led by experienced riders will guide novice commuter cyclists into the heart of the capital.
The aim is to help travellers get over the fear of taking their bike onto the busy roads in central London.
Rides will depart at 8am from six different locations around the capital. Cyclists who join up will be greeted by ride marshals from the London Cycling Campaign, and given a basic bike check a cycle map before getting on the road.
The first Cycle Friday will take place on Friday 14 August, and will continue every Friday until 2 October.
Mr Johnson said: “ Whether it's Monday, Wednesday, or Sunday I tend to go by bike but, although it is safe and getting safer, I fully appreciate that some people find it a little daunting at first.
“Cycle Fridays are a brilliantly simple way of giving thousands of commuters the confidence to get cycling. I’m sure that when they see how much of a fun, healthy and convenient experience it can be they will be hooked.”
Koy Thomson, Chief Executive of London Cycling Campaign, said: “We know that a third of Londoners own a bike and many want to cycle more.
“But force of habit, particularly with commuting, stops them switching to the faster, cheaper alternative. Cycle Fridays will help people break old habits and exercise their choice to cycle”
Transport for London has made more information available on its website.
The Cycle Friday routes are as follows. All convoys start at 8am:
- Start in Brixton, at the corner of Brixton Road and Coldharbour Lane, heading to Russell Square.
- Start at Finsbury Park, at Finsbury Park Gate, Seven Sisters Road, heading to St Pauls
- Start at Mile End, under the Green Bridge near Mile End station, Mile End Road, heading to St Pauls.
- Start at Ravenscourt Park, outside Ravenscourt Park Tube, Ravenscourt Place, heading to Trafalgar Square.
- Start at Swiss cottage, outside Theatre, Eton Avenue at the junction with Swiss Cottage Gyratory, heading to Holborn and continuing to the City.
- Start in Greenwich, at Cutty Sark Gardens, King William Walk, heading to St Pauls.

... Finally! Something done by TfL and Boris Johnson to encourage people to cycle. I fully support the scheme, as I know many friends who can bike, but are afraid to do so as they have never done it before... Cycle Fridays will help to convince many skeptical commuters.
